Re: Spying features in Ubuntu
Any time you use computer networks in any form, you are exposing yourself.
It's unavoidable with the Internet in its current form (which many teams
are working to rework).
The Android/iOS analysis only shows "lazy spying" where app developers have
directly embedded analytics libraries from third parties. Any of that
could be routed via the servers of the app developers to make those metrics
look better, but without making us any less compromised as users.
Ultimately the only "fix" for this stuff is either:
1. Don't use the Internet at all
2. Always use Tor (better)
3. Wait for other decentralized "new Internet" projects to come to fruition
- Ethereum, MaidSafe, etc.
As Richard himself has said ... If you don't want to be spied on, don't use
a mobile phone!
So I think that trying to make Richard happy with Ubuntu Phone is a
fruitless task. Even if you could do everything perfectly, you're still
sitting on top of compromised hardware running on top of proprietary
wireless networks. It can never "work" to that level of purity.
Just follow the Replicant mailing lists to understand the challenges.
They have been at it for years, and are sitting on top of the same
compromised base as Ubuntu Phone:
