Yes you can do that as well using the command belowsudo mount /dev/loop0 / -o remount,rw

You'll be in writable mode in that particular session only.Another way is to install TweakGeek or Ubuntu Touch Tweak Tool from the Open Store.Both apps has a toggle to make your phone writable.Regarding OTA, from my experience it doesn't really stop you from updating through OTA.What will happen is that the OTA might break anything you did through apt-get.

Thank you. The reason I asked, was because I have seen two conflicting reports. I have the nexus 4, and that command doesn't work. I read online somewhere (I fail to recall where) that you just remount it as read write, and you can flip between read and read write modes, but you lose the ability to use OTAs. Is there another source we can look towards for confirmation?Thanks

 When an OTA arrives it's quite possible that it could badly interact with changes you've made.  You would then have to reflash the device.

 Reflash the device (losing all data on the phone).
 
 
3) when going back to Read Only, would I lose my changes? 
 
 
 Yes.
 
 
4) would I recieve OTA updates while in Read Write? 
 
 
 Yes.
 
 
5) if I would still receive OTAs, would they overwrite my changes? 
 
 
 Yes.
