I agree that it is not obvious, although it might seem natural after using
other apps with this kind of navigation.

of pages would do (like the iphone and others). Maybe some vertical element
on the right (not exactly clean looking) or some indicator in the Title
bar.

Dots at the bottom is a good idea. In addition we could try to detect if
the user scrolls down and show a message hint telling the user that the
intention is to scroll sideways. Also, the header already contains an >
which I think is meant to indicate multiple tabs.

> On a more naive note: wouldn't a simpler listview with vertical scrolling
accomplish the same thing? I would think it is more suitable to show "more
of the same content". I horizontal swiping is generally used to switch
between different views/contents (like indicated as tabs) or as stack
navigation.

A vertically scrollable list could definitely work. I've seen both in other
readers and just found the sideway scroll to be more aesthetically
pleasing. However, I'm all for doing vertical scroll to show more items +
horizontal scroll to change category/change view if we rather want that.
The design should in any case work.

For larger screens however, I find the pagewise horizontal page shifting to
be better suited because one can have more creative layouts.

(I am sure we all do) but have had some "last minute surprises" I hadn't
anticipated. I will try to catch up.

I've felt the exact same way. We're all quite busy with other stuff, so
we'll just have to work in bursts and try to keep eachother updated on the
progress. I'm in any case excited about everything that's going on. I think
we're going to get an impressive reader put together (in addition to all
the other cool core apps in development)!
