[Bug 426259] [NEW] Display problem with Ubuntu 9.04 on Thinkpad SL400

Dear all,
My problem is like this: on boot, Ubuntu chooses the wrong display settings. My log in page and desktop do not use the entire screen. I am left with about one inch of unused screen space on both sides. When I try fixing it with the Disply option in System, things usually get worse. Note also that the problem is on and off, being more on lately.
