[Bug 477134] [NEW] X server hard crash when kubuntu System Settings Display app is started

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On a Thinkpad X61t the X server in Karmic reliably crashes when the
Kubuntu Display system setting app is started -- its display never
appears. This is true for the live desktop (booted from USB flash drive)
in both x32 and x64 versions as well as an upgrade from from Jaunty.
After the crash it is not possible to regain access to the machine
through the laptop keyboard and the X server process cannot be killed --
it is in disk-wait state.

lspci identifies the graphics controller as: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
Xorg.0.log identifies the graphics controller as: PCI:*(0:0:2:0) 8086:2a02:17aa:20b5 Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller rev 12, Mem @ 0xf8100000/1048576, 0xe0000000/268435456, I/O @ 0x00001800/8

The automatically attached files describe the running system before the
crash. I will append additional information from syslog, strace, etc.
after making the crash occur again.

This may be an instance of multiple bugs -- the display settings app in
Ubuntu (gnome) works fine. So it seems there may be both a misuse of the
X server by the kubuntu app and a bug in the X server that causes it to
crash in a particularly nasty fashion when so abused.
