[Bug 520226] [NEW] Microsoft Natural 4000 Keyboard and logitech mouse initialization conflicts

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

This may or may not be related to bug #295849.

I have a Microsoft Natural 4000 Keyboard with a USB connector and a
Logitech Mouse which can be connected either via USB or PS/2 mouse
connector. The two devices don't seem to work well with each other if
both are connected via USB (the keyboard won't work in X but works on a
console). With 9.04 and 9.10, I used to be able to have the keyboard and
mouse coexist if the mouse was connected via PS/2. However with Lucid
10.4 Alpha 2, neither works and the behaviour is different depending on
whether the machine just did a coldboot or a warmboot.

If I remember correctly from my testing:
With both USB mouse and keyboard, the keyboard works but the mouse doesn't. If the mouse is hot-unplugged and replugged then both work, but this isn't sustainable since it eventually will wear down the contacts (not to mention looks pretty stupid to anybody else).
Warm-booting with a PS/2-connected mouse, the USB MS Natural 4000 keyboard doesn't work if it's the only thing plugged in, but will work if I also have a PS/2 keyboard plugged in.
Cold-booting with a PS/2-connected mouse, the USB MS Natural 4000 keyboard doesn't work if it's the only thing plugged in, even if I have a PS/2 keyboard also plugged in.

In all cases, the keyboard works when selecting boot options in grub.

I suspect this might because (if I remember correctly) the Natural 4000
implementation sets up a fake mouse to handle input from some keys (the
zoom slider maybe?) and that may be causing confusion with the real
mouse. I'll attach some Xorg and dmesg logs of the three different
startups (cold boot and warm boot with PS/2 mouse, USB Nat 4000
Keyboard, and generic PS/2 keyboard; coldboot with only USB keyboard and
mouse)
