I would just like to add that this is Gnome Specific. I installed Kde4
and Xfce4 and logged into both desktops from Gdm with touchpad working
fine. I also tried with Kdm (to check for Gdm/Gnome related), still ok.

So something Xorg/Gnome related isn't working right.

  Update 04/03 killed all use of synaptics touchpad on Acer Aspire 3004
  
  Mouse froze at Gdm, couldn't click username to login
  Ctrl+Alt+F1 to terminal, login and startx
  Ctrl+Alt+T for terminal to connect to internet and reinstall xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, as well as gsynaptics and other touchpad configuration tools.
