Message #62392
[Bug 563464] [NEW] Window manager does not load
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
I'm pretty sure this hasn't been reported yet. I upgraded to 10.04
beta2, and when I restarted, my cursor was just the black X, none of the
windows have the window decorations, and none of my fun compiz keyboard
shortcuts and things work. Basically, compiz is not loading. This means
that I cannot move the windows around, resize them, or switch between
programs without clicking on the other one. Which makes things difficult
if I have one on top of another.
I have my computer set to launch firefox on startup, and firefox for
some reason starts in the top left corner, on top of the menu. So if I
want to open anything else, I have to first close out of firefox so that
I can get to the menu. You can imagine why this would be a problem.
(With the exception of a few programs like OOffice and calc which I have
keyboard shortcuts for.)
Also, I normally use the awn (avant window navigator) little dock bar
thing at the bottom. Because it gets info from the window manager, it's
not really working properly either.
I think that's the extent of the symptoms. As far as causes go, when I
was upgrading, the fgirx drivers did not install. I try to install them
and get: "E:
/var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx_2%3a8.723.1-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb: trying to
overwrite '/etc/ati/signature', which is also in package xorg-driver-
fglrx 2"
So that's really the problem I guess. I haven't done a whole lot of
troubleshooting. I'm in school and it's finals week :p
Thanks a bunch for any ideas. Everything else is looking great so far :)
