Binary package hint: xorg

I installed 10.04 and immediately upgraded to the latest linux-headers.
When i attached my Samsung 2333sw monitor.

I called Canonical support and was advised to chang this line in  /etc/default/grub:
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" 
to include "radeon.modeset = 1" (and radeon.modeset=0), but that did not change anything.


When the machine boots up, the laptop and LCD monitor are set to mirror each other (the default), both at 1024x768. When I enable an extended desktop, the LCD monitor goes blank when i click Apply.  The display on the monitor shows a black box as follows:
