actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
nvidia are highly supported in linux, you could try adding a boot option
to boot to command line single user and launch the x server from there
using:
startx
You will get intelligent output if it fails
You could even try to install the nvidia proprietary driver from this
mode (assuming your network devices are autodetected, wifi will most
likely NOT work)
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-180
then try to run:
startx
I would also use the CD to test RAM. Do other bootable Linux desktop CDs
work ok?
