Tom proposed the following answer:
Well it's an inelegant answer and very Windowsish but yes i would go for
a reinstall of the one that worked and then avoid upgrading to 9.04 as
8.10 still has support until 2010, April.
I hate to say it but nVidia are currently the best graphics cards to
have in linux as there are 3 different drivers that are all usually
quite good. I think the problem was more to do with some other issue
around the upgrade so i would wait until 2009, October, when 9.10 is
released. Guess what kind of card i've got? lol
When you are installing this guide might help but start it from the LiveCd session using the icon in the top left-hand corner so you can still surf and stuff while it's installing. I'm not sure it's a great idea to do that but i often have some simple light-weight game open while installing.

When you get to the partitioning section in this sort of case i usually
go for "Manual Partitioning" and then re-use the same partition i used
for ubuntu last time but carefully make sure that all the partitions are
UNticked in the "Format?" column ;) It's well worth trying.
If you do have any data you want to save then it's worth doing that from
the LiveCd session before you start the install - temporarily to
external drive is usually best. If you need to use the dvd-drive to
save your data onto then i have a way that might work using a LiveCd of
a different distro.
Hopefully something there helps a bit ;)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
