Hi, I thought I had better give some last notes on that Ubuntu installation for any readers with similar problem. Tried to do a manual installation using Ubuntu's partition editor but there was now no option to resize the Windows partition so backed out again. A bit more reading suggested that there might be a problem with the drive. Realizing that I had not done so for a while, I ran the command "chkdsk c: /f /r" in the cmd box in Windows XP which picked up and repaired a few errors. Ran it a second time to be safe.
Going back into Ubuntu installation I now found that I had the installing side-by-side option offered but went into manual installation in order to follow Tom's plan of partition. Still there was no option to resize the Windows partition so backed up one step and went with the side-by-side option just to get Ubuntu up and running which worked a treat. I was even able to go back on the net to grab the latest updates straight away.
When I am more familiar with Ubuntu and its partition tool GPartEd I intend to go back again and redo the whole installation along the lines of Tom's way of installation as it makes the most sense. Thanks Tom for all your help and the wealth of data that you were able to send my way. It all proved of great help. Scipio.
