The automatic way is usually plenty good enough and it's quite possible
to resize/move the Ubuntu partitions at some future point, if you feel
the need.  Resizing is quite risky (but not hugely so) and does take a
fair while which is why i try to avoid it.

I'm glad to hear you found why it was misbehaving and managed to fix it and install Ubuntu :))
