actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
you can use partimage in a live cd. this will create a compressed image
of the partition you selec, you will need to output it to a different
partition for storage (different drive ideally, or firewire/usb
external)
you can then burn it to a dvd (if it will fit) and use is as a source if
and when the drive fails.
You will also find te settings for your apps are in your home directory
in hidden folders. If you run:
cd ~/; ls -a
you will see them. You will need to back these up also (in some way) to
preserve app settings.
