In an effort to get full 5.1 out of my speakers, I installed a creative X-Fi sound card, model # SB0460 into my rig.  I've managed, it seems, to utterly disable ALSA and Pulse, but also OSS.  Specifically, I get the following error messages:

AutoDetect;
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.

ALSA;
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open audio device for playback.

OSS;
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open audio device for playback.

Pulse;
