The hardware is always fine. It works in Windows due to the fact that
companys make many thousnd percent more money supporting it so they put
more effort into supporting it.
If you run:
gksudo nvidia-settings
Does it show an error message first? What driver does it say you are
using? should be soething like 180.4.23 or somesuch
