i go with non-free components but haven't been asked to pay anything yet.  Hopefully one day i will be able to go completely OpenSource and really free myself but until then i just want to be able to watch multimedia movies and stuff easily.

Also this guide is good for dipping into occasionally and might help explain how to follow Arochester's advice
