Question #78367 on Ubuntu changed:

Tom proposed the following answer:
Ok i have an idea for re-installing 8.04. 8.04 is an LTS release which means "Long Term Support" and that means it is fully supported until April 2011. So it's first in line for bug-fixes, backporting - this is the release being used by corporate users and others that value stability. If you haven't got an 8.04 Cd then get the latest 8.04.3 which was released just a couple of days ago

The next LTS release is due in 2010 and is expected in April but there's been some recent discussion about making it the October release (April releases are the ".04"'s and the ".10"'s are released in October, lol)

Anyway when you install choose the "Manual Partitioning" which is the
3rd option right down at the bottom of the "Partitioning Section". then
make sure that there are NO ticks in the "Format?" column. This should
mean that all your programs and data remain intact BUT i would still
backup all your data (all the /home folder) just in case this goes wrong
at all, as it might.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
