1) Yes, i'd try one of the solutions Tom proposed.
2) Ubuntu is an EXCELLENT operative system. If there's any OS better than ubuntu, that could be Mac OS X.
3) I don't want to reproach nor want to start any showdown, but i think it would be better if you asked for help in a more polite way. First, because it is the well-mannered way of address to other people. And second, because you might find more people willing to help you that way.
4)Take it easy, don't fret if things go wrong at first. Just try the alternatives you've beengiven, and reply telling us if they worked. Consider the posibility of a problem in your computer's hardware too.
