First steps could be to unmute anything in 'gnome-volume-control', speaker symbol on the panel, right click to get a context menu.
ALSA architecture is common. Audio settings (system preferences) should be consistent with e.g. gnome-volume-control.
Usually sound card and other devices are recognized automatically and modules are loaded.
