Elegance is often over-rated. You did the job and got it done, anything more than that is superfluous. Please post the camera question as a new question

It's important to appreciate what you have achieved because you have
done a lot today. Many people really struggle with installing even a
simple program let alone a whole OS and even people who can do it often
try to avoid it if they can. There are going to be a lot of people
moving to linux over the next few years. Desktop linux is one of the
most rapidly expanding markets in IT today - so finding the install
process easy is a good skill to have. Tech. Support is one of the
normal ways to earn a living and make money from OpenSource.
You do deserve to feel chuffed for a good job done fast

Tom :)
