Tom proposed the following answer:
Hi :)
Voltage thing? Do you mean using Usb 2.0 ports instead of usb1.1? or
one of those splitter leads that plugs into 2 Usb2.0 ports on the
machine to supply a bit more power? or one of those Usb2.0 hubs that
includes a separate power supply?
Usb2.0 can supposedly deliver 400mA (or is it 500mA) which suddenly
sounds like quite lot to me - i can't believe those figures aren't
micro-amps.
Microsquish is very effective at spreading FUD, so hardware
manufacturers do seem to be quite ignorant about some things that are
painfully obvious once you start using gnu&linux distros. I try to
visit a site or two every month or so and politely post a few questions.
You made a good point about retail stores. There is a local internet
cafe that displays a stack of Ubuntu Cds quite prominently but the main
full-timers there haven't even run it as a LiveCd so they aren't great
at dealing with enquiries. Even so it's a great step forwards and
something i wish i could get going in more computer repair shops and
stuff like that around here. I think Retail Chains are a bit
unapproachable but local computer shops might be more interested.
Thanks for the suggestion ;)
Good luck and take care with this increased voltage idea, regards from
Tom :)
