I really expected this to be labeled a "feature" and wontfix by GNOME
but having a bug open for now 6 years restored my faith

Based on this Unity should eventually get its own desktop that doesn't
depend on nautilus, remember G3 has no icons on the desktop by
default, their motivation to fix it is even lower now.
