I don't get the issue, the HUD is only displayed if you do a brief
taping on alt, i don't know of any application that use such a brief tap
on alt, softwares always use this key in combination with another key,
any press longer than half a second if ignored, any taping in
combination with another key too, so i don't see any conflict with any
app there. For example, i can do alt-l (lower word) and alt-u (upper
word) in a terminal without any issue.
Trust me, the scenario where you are going to use Alt as a modifier
but then change your mind or get distracted is not as rare as you
might think.
