This is pretty normal, usually xorg.conf is not needed anymore.

Personally i have an ATI graphic card and the driver didn't show up in
the "Hardware drivers" application, so i just installed the ubuntu
package manually in order to run the other tests.
so apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx for me, i don't know the package
name for the nvidia proprietary driver, it depends on your graphic card
i think it's like "nvidia-glx-xxx" with xxx = 180 or 177 or 173, or even
nvidia-glx-new or nvidia-glx or nvidia-glx-legacy

you can check the graphic card supported by each driver in these pages :
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/180.22/README/appendix-a.html
(for the nvidia-glx-180)
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/173.14.12/README/appendix-a.html
(for the nvidia-glx-173)
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/169.12/README/appendix-a.html
(for the nvidia-glx-new)

if your card is very old you may be interested in the nvidia-glx-96 or
nvidia-glx-71 and you may find information about supported graphic card
by these drivers on this page http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html
(2nd and 3rd section)

I don't know if i experienced your crash, but when i first log in, it
