This works even easier for me as a work-around (nvidia):
Upon booting the normal kernel from grub just alt+sysreq+k to restart
gdm.  The enter key works fine this way after gdm restarts as well, and
you're not in the recovery selection.  Seems a much simpler way to deal
with it.  Oh, and if you don't have a "sysreq" key, it is the printscrn
key on a lot of keyboards.
