In the past they've given us a pre-release (unofficial) version of the
driver in time to include in Ubuntu.  The past few releases, this came
in shortly before beta.

(Indeed, the short window we have for testing fglrx is one of the major
reasons we put this group together, so we could tackle this in an
organized fashion with what time we do have.)
