One might wonder how it is possible to compress the sand isotropically
if the volume of grains is constant. Though it sounds strange, it is
what happens (almost). This is what makes most homogenization
theoreticians run away, as soon as they see such a weak (to say the
least) relation between macro-strain and micro-strain in granular materials.
For other materials (rock, concrete), (3) can be replaced by a stronger
"small strain" assumption.
