Jérôme Duriez proposed the following answer:
If you consider a direct shear box with wall boundaries, then this does
not correspond to periodic (=> infinite) boundaries. So you should give
up periodic simulations and PeriTriaxController, and define a model with
wall / box bodies as boundaries.
