As to the "if one page gets large enough to require

That is a fair point. It is however sometimes good to have also an 
overall view, not having everything fragmented into single 
one-screen-sized pages. The answer to this relates closely to folding. 
My ultimate paradise will be the tool, where I can interactively choose 
the scope and level of detail of my view. E.g. "I want to see the 
contents of this subtree (pages or headings, that would not matter 
anymore) to the depth of three" (deeper details would be hidden and and 
accesible upon unfold). In other words, in paradise there is folding and 
the tree of pages (Index) seamlessly continues with tree of headings (TOC).

There is a student (Hello, Honzo!) working on a related project. Its aim 
is a Zim plugin to automatically split a page into a tree of subpages by 
headings and vice versa, join a tree into a single page, keeping the 
structure as headings. Anchors and subpage-linking capability in Zim 
would certainly help him with keeping links consistency during joins and 
splits (for which we do not see a really good solution so far).

(We will appreciate feedback on the ideas in this mail, in the 
conference or privately.)

Concluded, intra-page linking certainly makes sense from my point of view.
