Why exactly would there need to be a distinction at all? It would be pleasing to the eye if it just blended perfectly with the gradient of the maximized window border.

HOT. Best of both worlds for maximized and unmaximized windows. I bet the design team could do something up very nicely to make it clear that the indicators weren't part of the window. The edge maybe rounded out at the bottom?
