Steps to reproduce:
 1) Set up a database with product_variant_multi (this may still be an issue without it; I haven't checked).
 2) Set up some products with variants.
 3) Navigate to the Products list view.
 4) Attempt to search for a specific variant.

This isn't possible.  You can work around this by setting up a filter
every time you want to search for a variant, but this is time consuming.
There should simply be a Variants search field.
