about this issue.  I mistakenly thought switching from a USB 3 to USB2
port fixed my problem but that was a one time only fix.  I am unable to
scan in xsane and other scanning programs such as:

sudo scanimage 
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1220?serial=00XXXXXXXXXX failed: Invalid argument
