I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 with the libsuitespare-dev package. The header 
files are located under

  /usr/include/suitesparse

"suitesparse" needs to be added to

  ./simula-scons/scons/pkgconfiggenerator/umfpack.py

It then works fine.
