I was plagued by this problem under Gentoo as well. It disappeared
after I removed the wxGTK 2.6.2-r1 that's current in Gentoo, and
manually installed wxGTK 2.6.3 (using kicad-sources-2006-03-28.zip).

I used gcc 3.4.4 for all this. If using gcc 4.1.0, the build fails
with countless errors.
