The problem is know and it affects every platform using composited desktop drawing. Current grid drawing and graphics code needs serious work. Well see what happens after Wayne gets his updates to the tree.
My guess is that if you disable 'aero' or what ever that Vista compositor is, you'll get bearable performance. At least on linux that helps.
