I've found my original posting about this:

It crashed with an X11 BadMatch error, which I could suppress with a call
to gdk_error_trap_push, and after that, it "just" looked weird (unuseable).

The switch to 64-bit Debian upgraded xserver-xorg-video-ati from
1:6.12.4-2 to 1:6.13.0-2, which I think is a resonable candidate
for the reason why the problem is now gone (for good, I hope :-)
