Regarding technical details Clive's code may not work too long because it seems to be wrapping around legacy file formats. They should not be used for data interchange anymore. Current scripting support can export module/footprint data from pcb, but schematic support is not there yet. I'd see that after schematic scripting support the whole RE problem reduces a lot. Starting from pcb, script pulls position and netlist data to schematic with switchable representation of components. If autorouter and autoplacer could be cleanly separated from pcb, they could be used for semiautomatic/assisted schematic creation as well.
