Granted - there are many types of harassment, Caroline and I are using
the ones that we've experienced, as an example.

I've done this. I ended up transitioning to using a real name,
precisely because I was going, and I didn't want to be seen as the
girlfriend of whichever people I was around (which has also happened -
even if the guy i'm with is wearing a wedding ring, and i'm not). That
way, fellow developers actually knew who I was - but I got far more
response with saying that I was Hobbsee, rather than going by my given name.

Also dealt with this one. No one tends to check the name on the GPG key
much, except for signing it. If you have your alias on irc, don't show
real names in mail, and don't have your real name on launchpad, no one
really seems to care, or to know what your real name is.

In Ubuntu, you really don't *have* to use a real name. In some cases,
it's helpful to, but still not forced. That being said, by keeping your
real name publically private, only people that you "trust" tend to know
about it anyway - which includes conference organisers, sponsors, etc.
