Got it installed, using the 'nomodeset' option to boot the CD, using the nVidia MX400 card. Strangely the 'nomodeset' option wasn’t required to boot the installed system. Then changed the card back to the Matrox G200, which also booted OK from HDD, as did all the others when I tried them. Strange.
