Phil, from the bug you linked us:
"Similar experience after installing 3.0.0.18. Crashes also include Synaptic, Nautilus, System Setting. After reboot to 3.0.0.17 no crashes."

So this is as bad as I think?  
Do we need to be telling people not to update, or not to panic?
