Thanks for your reply

ffplay seems fine.
melt reports as not installed. I installed it with apt-get install,  
and tried open shot again:

I notice some kind of video mode change when it starts up (relay click  
sound from the monitor, slight change in width displayed on the CRT)

I then get the same behaviour reported below.

It may be co-incidence, but dmesg adds lines like:
pulseaudio[1453]: ratelimit.c: 8 events suppressed

at about the moment I press play in openshot (<0.25seconds correlation).

As I exit the program, I get segfault at 10 ip 05c10a90 sp bfeeb450  
error 4 in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.180

Status in OpenShot Video Editor: New

Bug description:
Trying to import PAL DV file. When I press play, there is a momentary blue flash in the video display area, then black. The time display in the lower left reads 00:00:00.199 for 1 second, then  00:00:00.200 for one second, then repeats both 4 times (5 times total, over 10 seconds). timer stops at  00:00:00.200

No error messages on command line.

Installed from PPA. Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, 32bit on via savage km400 chipset.

Command line reports:
