That solved the problem with video effects but It still has issues every
so often where when I try to play then it closes out unexpectedly. I
reopen the program and try to do anything besides open an existing
project or import stuff then it closes out again. my only remedy for
this is to reboot my computer. what would I have to type into the
terminal to get it to update because I tried reinstalling through
synaptic, but that didn't upgrade my version. I will see if I can find a
place to download the latest version while I wait for you to get back to
me. Thanks for the help so far. I really appreciate it

  openshot force closes when doing anything

Bug description:
  I am running Ubuntu 10.04 I used Ubuntu software center to download. I
  am running Openshot 1.1.3 I try and do anything with the video effects
  and it closes without a warning. And recently it closes when I try to
  play any video that I put on the timeline. It seemed to be working ok
  before until I tried to cut a clip that I had reversed (except the
  video effects, those didn't work for me even before)
