There is a linux-modules-backports-wwan package that is in testing and
should be pushed to official lucid repositories soon:

The bug you may want to watch for is
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554099

With that, the only thing you need is a sufficiently new gobi_loader
(I've used 0.7 which is the latest revision, but my Vaio is an older one
with Gobi 1000 card).

Of course, this is roughly the same thing you did yourself, but it's
getting closer to being official :)

FWIW, Maverick seems to have appropriate drivers built-in.
