Patrick K proposed the following answer:
You have to remove several packages in order to remove the NBR.  Run
synaptic and remove the following packages:

go-home-applet
human-netbook-theme
maximus
ume-launcher
window-picker-applet

I think the main one to remove is the ume-launcher.  This will remove
the NBR front end, but you will still not have the bottom panel which
tells you the windows you have open.  Anyone know how to set that up?
