the dmesg -output you refer to is just the driver saying that it is happy. try doing things (like connecting to an AP) and watch syslog and messages in the log viewer and see if there are anything it stalls on...
The version of Network Manager and rt2960sta (which is the network drover that the 901 and 1000 uses) is a bit outdated in the 8.04-1 release of ubuntu eee (NOT eeeUbuntu or any other derivatives thereof)
