That is correct, we are giving the bottom edge completely to the app
developers as is explained here
http://design.canonical.com/2014/03/the-very-best-edge-of-all/ so the back
button has to go somewhere else.

That is difficult to discover. I could imagine having a back button at the
top left *and* having some gesture to trigger the back action.

On the other hand, apps can be designed to use the bottom edge to access
frequently accessed functionality, so maybe the back button won't be that
frequently used any more?

Or shake the phone to go back. No problems with finger placement then :)
