Voice and video call with services is fine for a start, but Ubuntu
should really make a difference and provide an integrated approach to
communication.
As a user you may only use a single service, such as Skype, but it's
probable that you also communicate with WhatsApp, Hangouts or Viber
(at least one of them in addition). Why not provide a plugin
infrastructure, so 3rd-party communication providers (like Skype,
Viber, WhatsApp, SIP providers in general, etc.) could integrate into
the phone's communication interface (phone app) natively?
I think we have discussed this idea in the past on this list. One
feature request somewhat related to this discussion is "Show contact
details from social accounts":
We should have another ticket to specify the integration of calling as
such. This one could be a start, "VoIP":
(Please click on "Affects me too" if you care about one of those tickets.)

Hi list,
after these announcements:
https://insights.ubuntu.com/2016/07/13/a-new-skype-for-ubuntu-alpha-available-now/?utm_source=ubunteu&utm_medium=url_shortner&utm_term=5rSi8Q&utm_campaign=shortner
and this
https://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/Skype-for-Linux-Alpha-and-calling-on-Chrome-amp-Chromebooks/td-p/4434299
I've just tryed to make a call with skype on MX4 (web version by Peter
Bittner https://uappexplorer.com/app/skype.peter-bittner ), and it works,
only voice calls for now, but WebRTC API works good with OTA-11 inside a
webview.
Have Canonical a plan to release an official Skype app? right now the Peter
Bittner web app it's a good compromise.
Someone have tested this new Skype features?
Cheers,
Marco
