[Bug 380126] [NEW] [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I have performed a fresh install of Karmic Alpha 1 i386 on my laptop, a
Dell Inspiron 510m. The touchpad is not correctly identified - the
generic mouse driver is being used, so certain features (such as tap-to-
click) are not available.

The touchpad was correctly detected in previous versions of Ubuntu
(Jaunty, Intrepid and Hardy) by default.

Debug logs included, and relevant output is pasted below.

conn@inspiron:~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i mouse
