forgot to mention, on my newer laptop with ivybridge it performs perfectly,
it only seems to have issues with certain (older?) chips. Ironlake isn't
super old though (2010). Performance with the blur on that chip is very
noticeably bad when performing actions like dragging an icon from the dash
to the launcher, or opening the dash over a playing video. If the chip is
just too weak to handle it thats fine, but it would be nice if at the very
least the dash turned opaque like in the OP's mockup when blur is disabled.
I tried static blur but it seems totally glitched (graphical artifacts when
dragging icons, in addition it only blurs the first image the dash is
opened over for the whole session, it never updates to what was under the
dash before it was opened).
